About Dr. Birdi

Raised by immigrant Indian parents who emphasized the importance of education, I took an unconventional path to becoming a physician. I wasn’t the best student in high school, spending most of my time focused on sports and having fun. My post-secondary journey started off rocky, but once I realized I wasn’t going to become a professional athlete, I had no choice but to take school seriously. My dad’s words — “If you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything” — became my mantra. I quickly learned that success isn’t about being “naturally smart,” but about hard work, consistency, and sacrifice.

I was fortunate to be accepted into my hometown medical school at the University of Alberta — an opportunity I never take for granted, as it completely changed the trajectory of my life. During medical school, I felt lost at times and unsure of the path I should take. I started residency working 80+ hours a week as a surgical resident before realizing that it was not for me. Eventually, I realized what I truly loved about medicine was talking to people, learning their stories, and caring for patients in their most vulnerable moments. My short attention span — and my strong desire to avoid a 9-to-5 job — made emergency medicine the perfect fit.

For over a decade, I’ve worked in some of the busiest emergency departments in Canada. Even after all these years, I genuinely love my job and remain grateful for the privilege of caring for patients every day. The emergency department is where medicine, humanity, and real life collide.

While I love my work in the emergency department, I cherish my life outside the hospital even more. The gym is my refuge and I’m a huge music fan and sports fanatic. I’m married to an amazing and incredibly supportive woman. Together, we’re raising two wild but wonderful kids who keep me constantly on my toes. They remind me every day what truly matters.

The Pulse and Perspective Podcast delivers gripping, real-life stories straight from the ER in a refreshingly concise format. Episodes are the perfect length for a solo car ride and never feel drawn out. The storytelling pulls you in immediately, offering fascinating perspectives from inside emergency medicine while clearly explaining what’s happening in terms anyone can understand. It’s especially refreshing that this isn’t a typical “health podcast” filled with studies or heavy medical jargon. Instead, it shares the perspective of an ER doctor who captivates the listener with emotion and empathy for his patients while also subtly highlighting the importance of preventative healthcare. Highly recommend.
